Literature Text

In the beginning of time when everything was new and the paint on the world was still fresh, Coyote had three eyeballs.  One was blue as the sea, one as brown as the earth, and one as green as the plants.  Coyote was quite proud of all of them.  When he wished to impress someone, he took out his eyeballs and juggled them, displaying their splendor and his dexterity.  The lady (for it was usually a lady) watched entranced as they spun ‘round and ‘round and was quite impressed.

One day, a particularly pretty lady came by, and Coyote juggled higher than he ever had before.  However, my dear, you must remember that the paint on the world was still wet, with everything so very new.  Because of this, one of Coyote’s prized eyeballs became stuck to the sky.

Coyote was quite disturbed at this occurrence.  He became determined to get it down. Coyote balanced a ladder against the sky so that he could climb up and reach his eye.  Unfortunately, the ladder slipped and tore a jagged stretch in the sky, letting many more stars peek through.  Coyote was annoyed but still determined to reach his eye.  He went to the very top of the very highest mountain he could find –the Rocky Mountains of course.  He reached as far as he could, but he could only just brush by the bottom of his lost eye.  Coyote sat down and began to think.  Perhaps, perhaps if he was loud enough, the eyeball would jiggle loose, and he could reach it.  So Coyote howled in the hopes that his eye would come down from the sky.  You don’t believe me?  Then go pay Coyote a visit, he’s still there, trying to howl down the sky.

So, this is adapted from a Native American constellation. (The eye is NOT the moon, it is a constellation.) The second part I added. Picture was found on google.
